What’s with Vijay Sethupathi’s Name Trademark?

'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi is getting his name registered as a trademark and a device mark of 'VS-Vijay Sethupathi' and 'VGS - Vijaya Gurunadha Sethupathi' under the class 3, 9, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, 25, 28, 30, 31, 32, 35, 38, 41, 43 and 44. All of the registration are being accepted and advertised by the Trademark Office. Now that is surely a wide range of classification but what does this mean and what is coming for us?

Nice Classifications are international classification of goods and services which is applied for the registration of marks. It was established through the Nice Agreement in the year 1957. Classes 1-34 deals with goods and 35-45 deals with services. All these classes together includes so many goods like non-medicated cosmetics, jewelry, leather bags and umbrellas, textiles, sporting articles, gaming, photographs, audios and cinematographic films. It also includes household items such as stationery, household utensils, coffee, tea and other such substitutes including chocolates and ice creams and non-alcoholic beverages. The area for his registered services includes advertising, business management, telecommunication services, education and entertainment and even temporary accommodation.

Why does a movie actor register trademark in so many classes without each class being similar or of the same genre? Now this is what I thought in the beginning, but as I went along reading the listing, the obsessed mind of mine suggested a few possibilities.

Possibility 1: Vijay Sethupathi might launch his own business and use this for trading his products or services, but to be on the bright side, he decided to register his name in all classes.

Possibility 2: Vijay Sethupathi is going to sell Vijay Sethupathi himself, meaning, he is going to use these trademarks for endorsement deals. He has been endorsing many brands through advertisements which all fall under many of these categories. There is a possibility that he might also charge the brands for using his trademark in their advertisements. This could extend until the product maybe.

Possibility 3: Another approach for registering trademark in so many classes is to prevent others from using his name. After this registration, if anyone else uses the name 'Vijay Sethupathi' for the purpose of their trade, then a legal action against trademark infringement can be taken instead of passing-off.

We can’t surely say what was the intent behind registering under so many classes but these two are the possibilities I can come up with. What do you think?
